with residents, landowners, commercial businesses, and industrial concerns to
provide fire mitigation and safety information, conduct fire inspections, issue burn

  • We began as the Stonewall Valley Volunteer Fire Department in 1949.  Back then there was only a handful of
volunteers (maybe 8 or 10) with big hearts, strong backs, but not much of anything else.
  • CF& I Steel Corp. donated the first fire engine (used, of course).
  • The volunteers were known as the “Gray Crew” because all the firefighters were over 50 years old.
  • The District (SFPD) was created by a vote of the people in 1999 and was the culmination of three years of
    intense effort by volunteers.
  • It is supported by tax revenues from a mil levy on property.
  • We have slowly but steadily grown into a volunteer team of approximately 34 men and women firefighters,
EMTs, Search & Rescue personnel and approximately 30 Auxiliary members.
  • SFPD encompasses 547 square miles of mountainous and foothill terrain on the east slope of the Culebra
    Mountains.
  • Within our boundaries are over 20 housing subdivisions and four established unincorporated communities:
Stonewall
Weston
Segundo
Valdez
many businesses, including the methane gas industry
numerous ranches - large and small,
thousands of acres of undeveloped wildland,
resorts and lakes - public & private

Multi-unit stations are located in Stonewall, Segundo, LaGarita, Long's Canyon, Wet Canyon and Cuchara Pass Ranches to provide quick strike capability using local volunteers.  Future station is
    planned for Aspen Rose.
