Service Plan
(The following is a summary from our Service Plan)
The Stonewall Fire Protection District provides fire and other emergency services
within the District boundaries. These services include, but are not limited to the
following: fire protection, suppression, control for wildland and structure fires;
public information and education; and emergency services. The District works
with residents, landowners, commercial businesses, and industrial concerns to
provide fire mitigation and safety information, conduct fire inspections, issue burn
permits and monitor and perform prescribed and controlled burns.

- We began as the Stonewall Valley Volunteer Fire Department in 1949. Back then there was only a handful of
volunteers (maybe 8 or 10) with big hearts, strong backs, but not much of anything else.
- CF& I Steel Corp. donated the first fire engine (used, of course).
- The volunteers were known as the “Gray Crew” because all the firefighters were over 50 years old.
- The District (SFPD) was created by a vote of the people in 1999 and was the culmination of three years of
intense effort by volunteers.
- It is supported by tax revenues from a mil levy on property.
- We have slowly but steadily grown into a volunteer team of approximately 34 men and women firefighters,
EMTs, Search & Rescue personnel and approximately 30 Auxiliary members.
- SFPD encompasses 547 square miles of mountainous and foothill terrain on the east slope of the Culebra
Mountains.
- Within our boundaries are over 20 housing subdivisions and four established unincorporated communities:

Multi-unit stations are located in Stonewall, Segundo, LaGarita, Long's Canyon, Wet Canyon | | and Cuchara Pass Ranches to provide quick strike capability using local volunteers. Future station is planned for Aspen Rose.
The Board of Directors meet at the Stonewall Firehouse the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. These meetings are open to the public.
